The Society for Virology (GfV) is a scientific society for all virological fields of expertise in Germany, Austria and Switzerland with its head quarter in Erlangen. In consequence of lacking representation of leading virologists’ interest of the German society for hygiene and microbiology, the Society for Virology (GfV) was founded in 1990.

Its emphasis is not just placed on medical virology, but as well on other molecular virology, virological infectiology and immunology, virus genetics and academic education. The society supports training and further training for young scientists, the virological publishing and academic education. About 1.000 members of the Society of Virology (GfV) are part of the largest virological specialist society (Fachgesellschaft) in Europe. With its numerous committees, guidelines and statements the society represents an decisive contact for scientific research, the health system and politics.
